Hecate

What is the effect of having Hecate in Act I, Scene 5? Does knowing that the scene was written by someone else change your interpretation of that interchange between Hecate and the witches?

Hecate seemed to come out of the blue for me, the plot of the story was running smoothly and then all of the sudden this powerful witch is talking for 2 pages. The fact that it was written by shakespeare really didn't matter to me, i think the scene could be left out but since i havent read the whole book i'm not sure if it will play a bigger role or not. It does however change my perception of the witches it down sizes them because it wasnt shakespeares original intent to have that scene put in. Basically i just think that it was a scene that wasn't needed right then it's more interesting what was happening to macbeth at that point.

I think Hecate is used to help the witches act more evil towards Macbeth. She knows that even though they made a deal, Macbeth only wanted their magic, and the witches would get nothing out of it. Knowing someone else wrote it didn't really help me understand anymore, it made it more confusing.

The effect is that the witches are being scorned for what they did. It shows that they arent in control of themselves they have a master. They arent as almighty as I first believed. The fact that it was written later then the actual play was kind of strange in my opinion. But I guess if it is nessasary its nessasary. We will see as the story progresses how important it is.

The scene where Hecate appears kind of sets your mind on the orgonization of the witches sort of "society" if you will. The fact that the part was written by another person dosent change my interpretation of the witches really.

We are not sure what to think of the exchange with or without the knowledge of a different author. This information just begs the question why change the wonderful work of Shakespeare?

The effect is to show how the witch have started the inbalance in the play. I don't like that the write new scenes for shakespreare play saying it "helps the play" if he didn't write it it doesn't need to be there.
